This year, Quay Dorsey and Alejandro Dias will teach third and fourth graders at Aiton Elementary School in Ward 7 of Washington, DC. Aiton is a Title I public school, which for them, means that more than 95% of their students receive free lunch. The Aiton community relies heavily on community support to fund their programs and materials.
Between the two homerooms there is a 5:2 boy to girl ration, with one homeroom comprised completely of African-American boys. As Black men Mr. Dorsey and Mr. Dias feel empowered to have the incredible task of changing the academic trajectory of their Black male students, who are typically Aiton's lowest performers.
